Client at a Glance

Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), one of India’s leading City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies, is at the forefront of developing natural gas infrastructure to deliver Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to millions of customers. As India’s energy transition accelerates, ATGL recognises the need to embed Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles deeply within its business model, not as a compliance exercise, but as a strategic lever for resilience, competitiveness, and stakeholder trust.

Oren, as a specialised ESG technology and advisory partner, was engaged to help ATGL move from intent to impact, creating a comprehensive, data-driven, and execution-ready sustainability framework that could evolve alongside the company’s growth ambitions.

The Challenge: From Aspiration to Institutionalisation

ATGL’s ESG journey began at a critical inflection point. While its leadership demonstrated strong commitment to sustainability, operationalising that vision across a complex and geographically diverse organisation presented significant challenges:

  • Change Management: Integrating ESG into a rapidly expanding organisation required cross-functional collaboration, standardised processes, and clear accountability structures.
  • Capacity Building: Internal teams needed deep expertise on emerging frameworks such as SEBI’s BRSR, CDP, and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), along with mechanisms for consistent data capture and validation.
  • Strategic Clarity: ATGL sought to translate its low-carbon vision into a pragmatic roadmap with defined KPIs, governance, and measurable business outcomes.

The mandate was not just to create reports but to build a living ESG ecosystem that could sustain growth, withstand scrutiny, and deliver long-term decarbonisation outcomes.

Oren's Solution: A Multi-Year Strategic Partnership

Oren’s engagement with ATGL was structured as a phased, collaborative journey, beginning with foundational system design and evolving into advanced strategic and technical implementation.

Phase 1: Institutionalising ESG Foundations

Our initial focus was on creating a sustainable and self-sufficient ESG management system.

  • Designing Process Architecture: We designed and implemented a comprehensive ESG data collection framework, defining key metrics, methodologies, and frequencies using our AI-powered ESG data management platform, Oren Sustainability Hub, enabling traceability, audit readiness, and alignment with SEBI’s BRSR structure.
  • Building Internal Capacity: Through targeted workshops and function-specific training, Oren upskilled ATGL’s teams on ESG disclosure requirements, global rating methodologies, and sustainability governance. This transformed ESG from a centralised function to an enterprise-wide practice.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Oren guided ATGL through its first Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) submission, ensuring both compliance and narrative alignment with SEBI’s evolving mandates.

Phase 2: Strategic Deepening and Integration

With a strong foundation in place, we expanded our engagement to drive strategic value and address more complex sustainability areas.

1. Global Reporting and Rating Excellence:

To move from compliance to competitiveness, Oren designed ATGL’s first Sustainability Report aligned with DJSI and CDP frameworks. The process involved aligning quantitative KPIs with qualitative storytelling, defining boundary conditions, and applying double materiality principles.

Oren managed the full DJSI submission process, leading to measurable score improvement in the subsequent assessment cycle.

2. Supply Chain Sustainability – Project PARIVARTAN

Recognising that a company’s ESG strength is only as strong as its value chain, Oren architected and launched Project PARIVARTAN — ATGL’s flagship supply chain sustainability programme.

This multi-tiered engagement included supplier identification and segmentation, digital assessments via Oren’s platform, ESG maturity scoring, and the execution of corrective action plans.

The initiative also included large-scale supplier training, on-site audits, and recognition events in Ahmedabad and Faridabad — embedding sustainability across over 100 critical suppliers.

3. Decarbonisation Roadmap Execution

Oren’s technical specialists translated ATGL’s low-carbon strategy into tangible, operational projects:

  • Fugitive Emission Monitoring: Designed and deployed a monthly monitoring system to quantify and manage unintentional gas leaks.
  • Carbon Offsets: Facilitated large-scale afforestation projects in partnership with local municipalities and schools, from feasibility assessment to verification of carbon offsets generated.

4. Strategic Financial Advisory:

Oren introduced ATGL to innovative green financing structures such as Sustainability-Linked Loans (SLLs) and facilitated discussions with financial institutions to align capital strategy with ESG performance targets.

The Outcome: A Model for Industry Transformation

The ATGL–Oren partnership exemplifies how an energy company can transform ESG from a reporting exercise into a strategic asset.

Impact Area Outcome
Governance & Capability Institutionalised an ESG data and governance system across all functions through Oren’s platform.
Disclosure & Ratings Achieved a measurable improvement in DJSI and CDP scores; published a globally benchmarked Sustainability Report.
Supply Chain Embedded sustainability across 100+ vendors through Project PARIVARTAN, creating a replicable model for value-chain ESG integration.
Decarbonisation Transitioned from strategy to execution through validated carbon offset projects and hydrogen/biogas feasibility studies.
Finance Initiated the adoption of sustainability-linked financing mechanisms aligned with ESG KPIs.

Complexities Managed

The engagement required navigating multiple layers of complexity:

  • Integrating ESG metrics across diversified business units and subsidiaries with varying data maturity levels.
  • Aligning dual reporting requirements — SEBI’s BRSR (mandatory) and DJSI/CDP (voluntary yet investor-critical).
  • Ensuring supplier participation in ESG assessments despite varying levels of awareness and digital readiness.
  • Converting strategic decarbonisation intent into technically and financially feasible projects validated through engineering models and carbon accounting protocols.
  • Synchronising disclosure timelines, assurance requirements, and external rating submissions — without disrupting ongoing business operations.

Oren’s combined capabilities in technology, ESG data architecture, and domain-specific advisory proved instrumental in simplifying this complexity into a coherent and measurable framework.

Conclusion

Through its partnership with Oren, Adani Total Gas Ltd. evolved from an ESG entrant to a sectoral frontrunner, with systems, skills, and strategies that will sustain long-term value creation.

For Oren, this engagement reaffirms its position as a partner in ESG transformation — combining data intelligence, technical rigour, and domain expertise to help organisations navigate complexity and achieve measurable sustainability impact.
